Beach days = best days, and since Stanford starts much later than most schools, I took a last minute beach trip to Pawley's Island, South Carolina with my good friend Ashton Borcherding and her family. Pawley's Island is in the Low Country, which is a marshy, tidal area along the South Carolina coast. With its live oak trees and brown water, it reminded me a lot of the Gulf Coast where I'm from. Unfortunately while I was soaking in the sun and waves, and enjoying a great weekend, Hurricane Harvey was hitting the Texas Coast. The storm’s rain unleashed unprecedented floods, which have affected tens of thousands of people. The rain is gone, and while my family’s home emerged relatively untouched, others were overwhelmed by the storm, and recovery from this catastrophe will take years. From afar, I watched with heartache as Harvey devastated the Houston and the Texas Coast. I love water but it can also be capricious; sadly, I witnessed both this weekend. As I prayed for Houston and awaited news, I took in the water surrounding Pawley’s Island. Here is a video of my time there:
